Key Blacklisting

Overview

Blacklisting is used to prevent a lost, stolen, or otherwise unauthorized iLOQ key from being used to access locks.

Phone Keys and Key Fobs can be blacklisted.

When a key is added to the blacklist, the locking system is instructed to deny access to that key.

Blacklisting should be used when the physical key or credential cannot be recovered and there is a risk that it could be used by an unauthorized person.

When to Blacklist a Key

Blacklist a key when it is lost, stolen, or otherwise outside the control of the organization.

Blacklisting is different from simply returning or revoking a credential. It is intended to prevent a credential that may still be in someone's possession from being used.

How Blacklisting Works

Adding a key to the blacklist identifies the credential as no longer authorized for access.

Because iLOQ locks are not continuously connected to the network, blacklist information must be distributed to the locking system before affected locks can recognize the blacklisted key.

For this reason, adding a key to the blacklist does not necessarily mean that every lock will immediately know that the key has been blacklisted.

Blacklist Updates Must Reach the Locks

The effectiveness of a blacklist depends on the updated blacklist information being delivered to the locks.

A lost or stolen key should therefore be treated as a security event until the appropriate blacklist information has been distributed throughout the affected locking system.
